Stapleton - A Brief History
September 21, 2008 3:13 pm TravelIt was on the year 1989 that the plan to replace Stapleton International Airport with Denver International Airport was first heard of in 1989. As early as those times, urban developers already brought up the discussion on how to best redevelop the site where the Stapleton International Airport originally stood; although it wasn’t until 1995 that Stapleton Development Foundation (which convened in 1990) was able to produce a master plan for the Stapleton planned community which was visualized as an urban development site that will be pedestrian-oriented rather than automobile-oriented – a design uncommon among many other planned developments. The Stapleton area is slated to become grounds for the "green plan," a world-recognized outline for a sustainable community. In fact, nearly one-third of the former airport site was slated for redevelopment as public park space.
