secure hard data drive destruction and ecology

I’ve been debating with a friend of mine, who says that recycling actually uses more resources than it saves. I disagree, of course, since I’ve been recycling religiously since I was twelve years old. Take secure hard data drive destruction, for example. They can totally clean the hard drive off some computer, then recycle the recyclable parts safely. My friend thinks it’s better to just toss it in a landfill, since it takes resources to do the work they do. I say, how can it possibly take more resources when you’re not having to make all new computers? We haven’t been able to agree about it.
