The Difference of the Good Players to the Great Players of Table Tennis
April 28, 2008 10:17 am SportsDid it make you wonder what’s the difference of a good table tennis or ping pong player from the the great players aside from just pure skill? Actually, the main thing that makes one diffrent is its discipline and ingenuity. When we talk about a player’s discipline, this comes from his fervent practice. We all know that practice can be sometimes or even always bored us. Imagine bringing down a case of balls to the table and practice serves for an hour. We are even shy to call over a friend to have him practice lob returns to you for fifteen minutes. These boring routine goes on and on. But without these practice sessions you’re simply not going to get any better, at least not mechanically. These pratice has actually an advantage, for the more you pratice the stronger you get. And if you think that strength is not needed in a table tennis game, think again and remember those powerful players who can send a ball back at you at a blazing speeds. Unlike outdoor tennis, there isn’t a lot of distance between you and your opponent. That ball is on you faster than you can imagine. If you don’t build up your strength you can’t quicken your reflexes. That is why, practice is badly needed.
Ingenuity comes from a player’s experience and this is not something that can be taught to anyone. Maybe you can say that you can mix up a serves and returns to keep your opponent off balance, but of course, for you to be able to do that you have to be able to feel each point. You need to develop a sense of being able to picture what’s the best course of action to take at any given moment during a point that will make your opponent scratch his head and wonder where’s that shot came from.
