A Retired Carpenter Starts to Drink More Often

Wally retired from the local carpenter’s union five years ago.  He spends a lot of his free time going golfing with his buddies and drinking in the evenings at the local bar.  Wally is a genuinely nice guy who is getting a reputation as a person who has to have his drinks in order to have a good time.  And since he has so much free time, he drinks virtually every day and for long stretches of time.  Sally, his wife, knows that things change when retirement comes but she is starting to wonder if Wally’s insistence on drinking everyday is one of the signs of alcoholism.  One sunny Saturday morning, Sally made a special breakfast and treated Wally as if it was his birthday.  Wally wasn’t used to this unless his wife had something up her sleeve.  About half way through breakfast, Wally stopped eating, looked at his wife, and asked, “I know you and I know that you have something special to talk about.  What’s going on?”  Sally laughed and then told Wally that she is concerned about his drinking and about how frequently he goes out with his friends to drink.  To quiet her concerns, she would like Wally to make an appointment with Doctor Salvo, their family doctor, and to honestly discuss his drinking behavior so that the good doctor can better determine what, if anything, should be done.  After such an enjoyable breakfast, Wally simply couldn’t refuse his wife’s request.
