Big Brother Africa
July 29, 2010 7:34 am Health and FitnessThe African version of the television reality show Big Brother had to be cancelled just a week into filming following an outbreak of malaria. The film crew and organisers waited until five of the ten contestants started to display malaria symptoms until they took any action. A spokesman said ‘this is an unfortunate end to the first season of the show in Africa but we were forced to let the contestants out of the tent prematurely in order to get the medical attention that they needed’. Malaria is a disease that kills over a million people each year and 90% of these deaths occur in Africa itself so taking any chances could have been a fatal mistake. Leaving the contestants in the tent for the remaining 8 weeks could have been an easier way to determine the winner of the show by way of ‘last man standing’.
