Early farmers learn in easten Iowa
March 26, 2008 9:10 am ArtsBack in the days when the state was just being settled eastern Iowa tourism played a very important part in getting the state settled. The Mississippi river was the main route of transportation at the time and the towns along the river were built to attract people to stop. The visitors learned what a good life could be made in the rich Iowa soil and many decided to become farmers. Clearing the prairie was back breaking work especially as the tall plains grasses had very long roots and it was difficult for a plow to break through them. But it was well worth the effort.
