All about the turkish oud
March 13, 2008 9:10 pm ArtsThe oud is a 2000-year old stringed acoustic instrument. In North Africa and as far south as Sudan, the oud is now commonly (but not traditionally) used to accompany the vocal folk music. The oud is the Arabic lute and is actually the etymological source of the word “lute”. The Oud is the instrument of choice for singers and composers. The pegbox of the oud is bent back at a 45-90 degree angle from the neck of the instrument. Although, the Oud is supposed to be a solitary instrument at its best, when left to sing on its own terms, the Turkish Oud is anything else but solitary.
